Tyler VanGemert
Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine
As a graduate of Fort Lewis College in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Biology, Tyler had already begun to study the Kung Fu art of Tai Chi in Durango, CO. His education at Fort Lewis included a minor degree in Philosophy, allowing him to grasp the essence of eastern belief systems easily.
Tyler’s path leads to the Tai Chi Chuan Center of New York. Master
C.K. Chu, a martial artist from childhood growing up in China, had been professor of Physics for a community college, while teaching Tai Chi Chuan for over 30 years. This was an auspicious combination, to have an abstract ability to perform martial arts well, and to communicate the subtle structural nuances from a western scientific language. Tyler was trained by Master Chu in the arts of Nei Kung, Tai Chi, and Taoist meditation.
With an undergraduate emphasis in Botany, plants and herbs were of interest while Tyler was living in Montana during 2003. He met people, who were growing their own foods and herbal medicines, and this relationship highlighted the profound connection of humans with the Earth. The understanding of “relatedness to all things,” is the source of Tyler’s passion for natural medicine. He believes that healthy hearts and minds will reflect a healthy planet, and vice versa.
Acupuncture school is the obvious choice, combining plant medicine, and dynamic bodily energetics. Tyler earned his Master of Traditional Oriental Medicine degree from Emperor’s College in Santa Monica, CA on December 18th, 2007. This education completes a well rounded world-view perspective from which Tyler practices today in his clinic. Some teachers and mentors include Yvonne Farrell DAOM, and David Chan OMD, of the Jeffrey Yuen traditional lineage of Classical Chinese Medicine and the Jade Purity School. Dr. Christine Chang’s classes on Chinese nutrition and James Borrelli’s Nei Kung provide the physical components of a healthy human.
Externship experience includes a semester at UCLA’s Arthur Ashe Medical institute, treating symptoms ranging from migraines and high blood pressure to irregular menstruation and insomnia. Venice Family Clinic was an externship opportunity that allowed Tyler to treat severe patient cases. These include post-stroke, fibromyalgia, and fungal infection to name a few.
Tyler is especially good with pain management and enjoys working with infants and the elderly. Diet and lifestyle coaching are his specialty.
